SECRET LANCASTER :-
The place where all sorts of things happen, but no-one ever sees them, or can prove they exist, or ever did exist.
Let's start with SECRET TUNNELS under the City of Lancaster.
They usually lead from Lancaster Castle to almost every other building in the City Centre.
Generally Public Houses.
Everyone has a parent or grandparent, who has seen, or even been inside, one of these tunnels. But they forgot to take a camera with them, or tell anyone at the time.
And now the tunnels are bricked-up and inaccessible.
But no-one knows where the bricked-up places are.
When asked for evidence, people will swear and curse, getting very abusive.
I disputed one tunnel from the Castle to a totally useless spot.
One person asked me "Why shouldn't there be a tunnel from the Castle to this place?"
When I asked him why there should be a tunnel, the abuse began again.
Tunnelling takes labour and time, and a definite reason.
Escape tunnels don't usually lead to the nearest Pub!
But that's what people insist is true.
I believe many of these abusive people are suffering from Gullibility Syndrome.
This is a condition which leads apparently normal people to believe strange things :
UFOs, Aliens, Illuminati, Secret Tunnels, Witches, ESP, spoon-bending, etc....

One Secret Tunnel is even said to lead around 1 mile to a place called Golgotha on the outskirts of the City, said to be the site of the Gallows..
It was supposedly dug to take the Pendle Witches secretly to their place of execution.
Or, alternatively, to bring their corpses secretly back to the Castle for disposal.

The average slope down from the Castle is 4 degrees, the steepest is 14.6 degrees.The average slope up to Golgotha is 3 degrees, the steepest is 11 degrees.
Quite an engineering achievement! If it were true.

The Mill Race :
Many people think the Mill-Race, or Main Drain, was also a tunnel from the Castle.
Except that :
1) It is a roofed-over ditch, not a tunnel.
2) It leads, and has always led, to the River Lune, from the Bulk area. The outlet sluice to the Lune is visible still, but this has been claimed by the Tunnel Dreamers as a Secret Tunnel entrance to the Castle.
I have heard one person swear their father had been inside here to the Castle, even though it was only recently re-discovered by construction works. It was not explained how the father knew it was the Castle, as he never actually exited the "Tunnel".

Secret Tunnels in houses, Public or otherwise :
The Golden Lion :
"Local legend tells of the spirit of a nun, who provided succour to the poor victims, who still walks the premises and further stories tell of a secret tunnel existing somewhere in the cellar. Do the spirits of the infamous Lancashire Witches still return to haunt this place? In April 2006, a local group studying incidents of an alleged paranormal nature went along to find out."
"A study of the cellar area provided no evidence of a secret tunnel existing but in one particular area one member later reported feeling very nauseous with intense pressure building up on the top of their head. They stated that the sensation returned when they revisited the area and they could not return there again. No logical explanation for these feelings could be found.
Two EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) experiments were undertaken in an attempt to capture voices of the dead onto cassette tape. The session in the cellar has produced one sound, which as of yet, is unexplained., which the group are currently studying. No anomalies appear to have been captured on camera, and video footage has not yet been fully studied. While our overall results are, at this moment, inconclusive, it is felt that the Golden Lion may yet have phenomenon and secrets to be revealed."
Rather than "inconclusive", I would think this visit was very conclusive.
NOTHING HAPPENED!
"No logical explanation" for someone feeling nauseous? What about imagination, or wanting to impress everyone else?
One unexplained EVP sound? A live tape recorder is bound to hear sounds of some kind.
In a small cellar like this one, I would think a Secret Tunnel to the Castle would be very hard to disguise. And why a Secret Tunnel? To deprive the citizens of Lancaster of their fun at seeing someone dragged to their execution? It was a grand day out for them.
Yet again, no solid evidence there, just ignorance about "phenomena" (plural).

Many people insist that any old cellar in a Pub or house has to be the remains of a tunnel.

Originally, the Merchants was a series of old wine cellars. But it's much more romantic to pretend they are Secret Tunnels, where all the staff from the Castle nip out for a quick one while the Lord isn't looking!

I have been given details of "tunnels" which are actually underground walkways at a Factory site. Although technically tunnels, they can't really be classed as "secret".
But I was grateful, and interested, to hear about their existence.
